My apologies to those who have commented thus far without said comments showing up. I've fixed the settings so the comments do appear now.

Comments are not moderated and will now appear without requiring approval, but I reserve the right to delete spam or abuse. My hope is to not use it. Formal policy is forthcoming, but in general, act with respect and all will be well. Thanks!

American Libraries, the magazine of the American Library Association, turns 100 in 2007.

If you're a reader of the magazine, or if you attend ALA's Midwinter Meeting or Annual Conference, or if you're involved with the ALA in some other way, you'll likely hear quite a bit more about this. (It's a big event for us. Things rarely turn 100 more than once, and then only by mathematical error.)

This blog will be sort of a backstage for the festivities. In the next several months, AL staff will be searching through the magazine's archives. That which is interesting or amusing will show up here, along with observations from today's perspective, personal memories from notable figures in the library world, and speculation about the future.

Do you have memories that you'd like to share? CentenniAL is looking for guest contributors; e-mail Greg Landgraf at glandgraf@ala.org for details.

We officially launched this blog at Midwinter. And yes, an actual design will be replacing the default "bluesky" skin shortly. (Update Jan. 22: The design is up! Choose the "AL100" skin in the right-hand sidebar if you're still seeing the default.)

CentenniAL

CentenniAL is the history of American libraries, as documented by American Libraries and by notable figures in the library field. It consists of personal memories, information from the magazine's archives, observations from today’s perspective, and, as “history” continues to be written daily, speculation about the future.

"In an age of rapid change, American Libraries remains the librarian's constant helper, keeping us informed and helping us do our jobs better. The transformations that are occurring in our libraries and our Association are reflected in the pages of every issue, and I applaud the editorial staff and all the library professionals who write for the magazine for taking us in new directions, since 2007 marks not only the 100th anniversary of American Libraries but the one-year anniversary of American Libraries Direct. And stay tuned; there's more to come!"—ALA President Leslie Burger
