The 2009 Arnulfo Trejo Librarian of the Year Award has been announced.

This year's recipient is Susan Luevano, an Anthropology, Ethnic and Women’s Studies Librarian at the California State University at Long Beach.

For immediate release
June 18, 2009

Academic Named Trejo Librarian of the Year by REFORMA

The librarian who was the first woman elected to the presidency of REFORMA, the national association to promote library and information services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking community, has been selected by the organization to receive the 2009 Trejo Librarian of the Year Award. Susan Luevano, an Anthropology, Ethnic and Women’s Studies Librarian at the California State University at Long Beach, will accept the award at the REFORMA National Conference this July in Chicago.
Ms. Luevano’s career in libraries spans more than 30 years, during which she has broken new ground on more than one front. She was a founding member of the Orange County Chapter of REFORMA and served as one of the first Presidents of the organization. In 1985 she was elected President of REFORMA National, becoming the first woman ever to hold that position.
More than these “firsts,” Ms. Luevano’s colleagues and friends noted her passionate dedication to advocacy for and service to the Latino and Spanish-speaking communities in which she has served. She is one of the creators of “Seeds of Change/Semillas de cambio,” an information competence tutorial which addresses the unique information skills that Chicano and Latino Studies students need in order to succeed in an academic setting. “Semillas de cambio” received the California State/Long Beach Scholarly and Creative Activities Award for Research.
Ms. Luevano is one of the founders of the Orange County Mexican American Historical Foundation, an organization with the mission of collecting, preserving and sharing the historical and cultural experiences of Mexican-American communities in Orange County, California. She currently serves as the Foundation’s Vice-President. She has served on the REFORMA/UCLA Mentor Program Executive Committee, as Chair of the REFORMA Education Subcommittee, and as Secretary and Board member of the Trejo Foster Foundation for Hispanic Library Education. Ms. Luevano was on the Conference Steering Committee for UCLA’S Memoria, Voz y Patrimonio, the first conference on Latino/Hispanic film, print and sound archives, held in 2003 and sponsored by the Trejo Foster Foundation.
Ms. Luevano is also the author of a number of publications, which include Library Matters: a Practical Guide to Using the University Library, Mexican/Latino Immigrants and the Santa Ana Public Library: an Urban Ethnography, and Immigrant Politics and the Public Library.
Ninfa Trejo, President of the Trejo Foster Foundation, said,

“The Trejo Foster Foundation for Hispanic Library Education is proud to honor librarians that continue to work with colleagues and communities to promote services to the Spanish-speaking by sponsoring the award for the REFORMA Librarian of the Year. Susan Luevano epitomizes the ideals embodied in this award.”

“Anyone who has met Susan or heard her speak can recognize her commitment to advocacy for individuals who do not have someone to champion them,” said Mónica López, President of the Orange County Chapter of REFORMA.

About the Trejo Librarian of the Year Award
The Trejo Librarian of the Year Award is presented annually by REFORMA to recognize a librarian who has distinguished himself or herself in the field of librarianship, promoted and advocated services to the Spanish-speaking and Latino communities, and made outstanding contributions to REFORMA.

About the Trejo Foster Foundation
The Trejo Foster Foundation was founded in 1992 by REFORMA founder Dr. Arnulfo D. Trejo to serve as a significant force in advocating quality library and information services for Hispanic/Latinos in the United States; to influence schools of library and information science to recruit, retain and graduate more Hispanic/Latino students and to incorporate more Hispanic/Latino perspectives into the curriculum; and to provide a forum for the development, discussion and promotion of Hispanic/Latino library and information issues.

About REFORMA
Established in 1971 as an affiliate of the American Library Association, REFORMA seeks to promote the development of library collections to include Spanish-language and Latino oriented materials; the recruitment of more bilingual and bicultural library professionals and support staff; the development of library services and programs that meet the needs of the Latino community; the establishment of a national information and support network among individuals who share similar goals; the education of the U.S. Latino population in regards to the availability and types of library services; and lobbying efforts to preserve existing library resource centers serving the interests of Latinos. Currently there are 26 local REFORMA chapters across the United States.

- REFORMA -

Her colleagues from Orange County made a most compelling case for Susan, noting her many contributions to REFORMA, the library profession, and to our Spanish speaking communities.  Attached you will find a news release with more information regarding Susan's achievements and the Arnulfo Trejo Librarian of the Year Award.

Susan will be formally recognized at the REFORMA fundraising event during ALA's Annual Conference in Chicago. The event is scheduled for Sunday evening on July 12. Please join me in congratulating Susan for this much deserved award.

Lastly, I want to acknowledge Ninfa Trejo and the Trejo Foster Foundation for Hispanic Education for their support and for sponsoring this award. I would also like to thank the Librarian of the Year Committee; Janice Greenberg, Beth Graham, and Jessica Ramos, for their assistance.

2010 National Women’s History Project [NWHM] Theme is Writing Women Back into History.

Dear Friend,

The theme for 2010 is Writing Women Back into History.  Next year is a landmark women’s history anniversary and we are launching a special campaign to encourage celebrations in our nation’s schools, communities, and workplaces throughout the year.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as the first National Women’s History Week, which in 1987 became National Women’s History Month.

To recognize this special 30th Anniversary, the National Women’s History Project has selected Writing Women Back into History” as the theme for 2010 and all previous National Women’s History Month Honorees will also be recognized.

This 30th Anniversary is an important time to recognize the decades of progress and to become acquainted with the individuals and organizations that have kept our history alive and acknowledge their ongoing efforts to never again let women’s accomplishments be relegated to a footnote.  Now, more than ever, the work of this movement needs to continue and expand.  Each new generation needs to draw information and inspiration from the last. It has been an amazing journey and one shared with countless others.

In the early eighties, the topic of women’s history was limited to college curricula and even there it languished.  At that time, less than 3% of the content of teacher training textbooks mentioned the contributions of women and when included, women were usually written in as mere footnotes.  Women of color and women in fields like math, science, and art were completely omitted.

The essential role schools play as the major transmitter of cultural values made this omission all the more problematic. This limited inclusion of women’s accomplishments served to reinforce the idea of women’s secondary status and deprived students of viable female role models.

Today, when you search the Internet “women’s +history + month” you’ll find more than 40,500,000 citations.  These extraordinary numbers give testimony to three decades of the tireless work of thousands of individuals, organizations, and institutions to write women back into history.

In celebration of this 30th Anniversary, we are inviting women’s history performers, authors, filmmakers, and other creative individuals, as well as organizations, historic sites, and museums, unions, and work groups, school groups, military units, universities and women’s history programs as well as parents, grandparents, and interested individuals to join us in recognizing women as a force in history.

Please consider participating in this campaign by joining the National Women’s History Project’s Network with a NWHP Membership  or Student Membership , or help underwrite the campaign with a special In Her Name donation, or encourage an organization to join as 2010 Non-Profit Partner (less than a million dollar budget) or 2010 Non-profit (more than a million dollar budget), or with a listing as an 2010 Author/Performer/Presenter or with a publication Publication Display ads (2" x 3.5") or Publication Display Ads (4" x 7")

For the full listing of ways to join our Writing Women Back into History Campaign visit Celebrating 30 Years WWB.

We look forward to joining with you in this special campaign to write women back into history.

Best wishes,

Molly
