Seattle Sunrise Speakers

As I am going through some of my notes from ALA, I was reading some of the highlights from Susan Erschler, one of the Seattle Sunrise Speakers. Both were excellent! I thought I would just share some of the highlights from her presentation that are pertinent and encouraging as I am working on the projects for Emerging Leaders and life.

• Vision drives activity. If you have 100% commitment to a vision, the right activity follows.
• Put your goal in writing. Put it where you see it all the time. Burn it in your mind.
• DREAM BIG…break down into manageable pieces…plan!
• Track your progress.
• Don’t be a loan ranger.
• High risk is associated with high goals. Manage the risk through preparation.
• Take your mind off the obstacle.
• Push through pain.
• Yesterday’s challenges are today’s norm.
• Surround yourself with positive quotes. Some of hers:
"Forget past mistakes. Forget failures. Forget everything except what you are going to do now and do it." - William Durant founder of General Motors
“You can have anything you want-if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, have anything you desire, accomplish anything you set out to accomplish-if you will hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.” –Robert Collier

Have a quote for AL article?

Dear ELs,

Maureen and I will be working on an article about the program for the June/July issue of American Libraries. We are looking for a few good quotes in each of these categories: why I applied for this program, what Midwinter was like, what I have learned so far, what my future leadership plans are...
Email connie@cjrlc.org You could find your name in AL...

How the Projects Were Chosen

A part of the Emerging Leaders program, the projects are a way to connect participants to each other and to one facet of ALA. We asked the divisions for topic ideas for virtual projects which could be worked on between MidWinter and Annual and a number were submitted. We added others, combined similar themes and offered 37 different ideas with the goal of having 21 projects chosen with 5 people in each. ELs were given 10 points to bid on 1-10 projects and every effort was made to assign each person to a chosen project. We ended up with 23 projects, most with five or six people. A few have four and one has three.

Then each project was given an ALA resource person for content and a mentor from the library community to help with process. We hope that the projects increase community within the group, link each participant to one or more ALA staff, shed a little light on an ALA issue, and contribute to the effectiveness of ALA.

Teams will report on their projects and the EL experience at a poster session at Annual and will contribute to a wiki for communication with the library community.
