In response to: Electronic Member Participation Survey

I understand that you are seeking input to help deal with a resolution on opening up all committee lists beyond the committee membership, although this blog and the survey we have been asked to complete do not mention the resolution. Adopting this resolution will not be in the best interests of informing and engaging the membership. Committee have to be able to share half-formed ideas, opinions, and explore options without having to worry about or explain what is transpiring to anyone who happens to get on the list and wants to pick at language, intent, etc. It is essential that committee function quickly and efficiently. Meetings as ALA provide opportunity to people to ask questions and provide input. This may not be enough since conflicts and inability to attend all meetings of interest limit participation. Opening up lists is not the answer. Using other technology to solicit comments on actions or to post agendas and minutes could suffice. If my committee list was open I would take my comments underground to a private list to ensure that my participation was effective and efficient and not subject to misinterpretation and diatribe by others who are not well informed about the committee's work or the context of our comments and dialogue. Even well meaning and good comments can lead to long conversations on a list that do not really keep the agenda moving and on the mark. I do believe in asking committees to have reports and for ALA to provide means for member input. I don't think the committee lists are the right way to do it.

In response to: Electronic Member Participation Survey

Although it is a shame to have a charge brought against the most upstanding organization and loyal supporter of us hard working regulars, I wonder if there isn't a person seeking a position and not going through the right channels--------isn't the correct person for the position????

The volunteer form link above needs to have the ending period removed or else it causes an access error that the URL is not on the new site. Removing the period from the address made it work just fine.
