Gary Klein, Reference Librarian at the Hatfield Library, Willamette University, produced the following analysis of the results of the 2007 ALA election. Information about who won what for whom is avalable at http://www.ala.org/election2007.

Gary's analysis:

Hot off the presses from the American Library Association's website,
this year's presidential race was a very narrow one, with only 125 votes
separating Nancy A Davenport from the winner, James R Rettig.

The votes cast for the treasurer's race was a bit wider, with 178
ballots separating Jo Ann Pinder, from the winner Rod M Hersberger.

The total number of ballots submitted this year was 15,031.

There were 95 candidates competing for 33 seats on ALA Council.

Please extend a hearty congratulations to all of the candidates for
ALA's council positions, and for all the other vacancies within ALA's
other units.

Here is my annual analysis of results of ALA elections for Councilor
At Large positions, showing the number of ballots received, for each of
the candidates, and the cutoff point, as to what was the minimum number of
ballots that elected people into office.

This year, the least number of votes cast for a councilor candidate
was 1,506. and the most popular candidate received 3,965 votes. The
cutoff point for winning a councilor at large position was 2,853 votes in
2007, compared to 3,216 in 2006.

The least number of votes for a councilor candidate in 2007 was
2,034, the most popular candidate receieved 4,769 votes. The cutoff point
for winning a councilor at large position was 3,216 votes in 2007. The
average person who voted, casted a ballot for only 16 or 17 camdidates
(out of a maximum ballot for 33 candidates). Indicating once again, that
most ALA members do not try to wade through the process of selecting the
33 best candidates.

If you could favorably impress 2,855 of your colleagues in ALA, you
could have been elected to ALA Council! That equates to receiving a vote
of confidence from just more than 22.2% of the ALA members who cast their
ballots.

Here are the individual results, ranked by the number of ballots
voted in favor of each candidate for 2007:

Members of the American Library Association are change-agents within their communities. From public to academic to school to research and special libraries, ALA members have an immediate, dynamic impact on the quality of life in a community; on successful student learning outcomes; on the sustainability of critical engagements with the past and the extending access to tools for charting a new future; and on the usefulness of work/life in every field of human endeavor. And this blog would like to show them off.
