Electronic Member Participation Survey

Electronic Member Participation Survey Permalink 03:59:19 pm, Categories: General, 230 words

The ALA Task Force on Electronic Membership Participation (TFOEMP) has been charged with evaluating ALA policy as it relates to members' ability to engage with and interact with the work of the association through committees and other working groups. A survey of members' practice and attitudes toward serving on Association committees, task forces, and interests groups at a distance is being undertaken. Through this survey, the TFOEMP hopes to gauge member familiarity, interest, and comfort with various means of participating both synchronously and asynchronously.

Please visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=axHo_2fVc4R3PNwqeRLOkE9g_3d_3d to respond to the survey. You will be asked to provide your ALA Membership ID. The survey will take 10 minutes and offers both structured and open responses. Member ID numbers will be collected in order to correlate responses in the aggregate to membership participation in divisions, round tables, and committees, as well as by geographic regions and type of library or related field. Asking for your member ID saves approximately 12 questions and allows you to immediately begin the survey. No personal identifiers will be retained and responses will be reported solely in the aggregate.

Please direct any comments or questions about the survey to John Chrastka, ALA Director for Membership Development and Staff liaison to the TFOEMP at jchrastka@ala.org where they will be directed to the Task Force.

Although it is a shame to have a charge brought against the most upstanding organization and loyal supporter of us hard working regulars, I wonder if there isn't a person seeking a position and not going through the right channels--------isn't the correct person for the position????

I understand that you are seeking input to help deal with a resolution on opening up all committee lists beyond the committee membership, although this blog and the survey we have been asked to complete do not mention the resolution. Adopting this resolution will not be in the best interests of informing and engaging the membership. Committee have to be able to share half-formed ideas, opinions, and explore options without having to worry about or explain what is transpiring to anyone who happens to get on the list and wants to pick at language, intent, etc. It is essential that committee function quickly and efficiently. Meetings as ALA provide opportunity to people to ask questions and provide input. This may not be enough since conflicts and inability to attend all meetings of interest limit participation. Opening up lists is not the answer. Using other technology to solicit comments on actions or to post agendas and minutes could suffice. If my committee list was open I would take my comments underground to a private list to ensure that my participation was effective and efficient and not subject to misinterpretation and diatribe by others who are not well informed about the committee's work or the context of our comments and dialogue. Even well meaning and good comments can lead to long conversations on a list that do not really keep the agenda moving and on the mark. I do believe in asking committees to have reports and for ALA to provide means for member input. I don't think the committee lists are the right way to do it.

Members of the American Library Association are change-agents within their communities. From public to academic to school to research and special libraries, ALA members have an immediate, dynamic impact on the quality of life in a community; on successful student learning outcomes; on the sustainability of critical engagements with the past and the extending access to tools for charting a new future; and on the usefulness of work/life in every field of human endeavor. And this blog would like to show them off.
